Utility Locators are responsible for locating underground utilities for clients and property owners in compliance with 811 dig laws, using utility maps, as‑built civil engineering drawings, GIS data, and various electronic locating devices. They mark findings with flags or paint, record locations via a cell‑phone app that stores photos and documentation, and prepare reports, forms, and memos for each ticket. The position also includes taking photographs of located lines and investigating any excavation damage, as well as participating in an on‑call rotation.
Candidates must be knowledgeable of best locate practices, 811 regulations, and be able to read and interpret utility maps and drawings. They are expected to keep all equipment and vehicles clean, operational, and tobacco‑free, maintain small‑ to medium‑sized trucks, travel extensively (75 %+), and hold a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a DOT physical. Additional expectations include passing a drug screen, working variable schedules and overtime, punctual attendance, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and effective problem‑solving.
Northern Lights is hiring full‑time Utility Locators and requires at least two years of locating experience. The role allows locators to operate their assigned areas independently while still receiving support from the organization.
