This role provides leadership for Electrical Technicians, Hydro Operators, and Hydro Field Technicians who install, maintain, and calibrate critical hydro‑electric equipment and instrumentation.
Key responsibilities include fostering a safe, compliant work environment, navigating challenging operational situations, and applying NERC PRC‑005‑6 standards for protective relays, voltage/current sensors, and station services. The supervisor schedules maintenance, ensures proper documentation, and stores evidence of testing in SMUD’s work‑order management system.
The position’s purpose is to supervise, direct, plan, organize, and document preventative and corrective maintenance and construction activities for power‑generation assets. It also involves developing and coordinating generation goals, mentoring staff, and aligning department objectives with other SMUD functions.
Candidates must hold a high‑school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record, and have at least five years of progressively responsible experience in power‑generation maintenance or construction in a supervisory capacity. Required knowledge includes maintenance methods, inspection techniques, relevant regulations, and modern office and computer procedures.
Desirable qualifications include two or more years leading technical teams in a hydroelectric environment, hands‑on experience with protective relays and high‑voltage switching, and demonstrated proficiency with enterprise work‑order systems such as SAP or Documentum. Applicants should also have a proven safety‑culture record and the ability to develop and adapt operational processes for hydro facilities.
The position offers a salary range of $127,857.60 to $200,262.40 and is classified as a Civil Service role. Applications must be submitted by February 2, 2026.
The role is on‑site at an SMUD campus and includes access to CalPERS retirement benefits, a defined‑benefit pension, and comprehensive health plans. SMUD emphasizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and equal‑pay commitments, and offers a vibrant Sacramento location with cultural, educational, and recreational amenities.
