The OSP Field Engineer collects detailed telecommunications data on‑site, validates existing designs for aerial, buried, and underground fiber networks, and documents conduit, handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities. This role also provides informal guidance to junior staff and ensures accurate field information is delivered to engineering teams.
- Identify, photograph, and document detailed information of cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes, and other outside plant infrastructure.
- Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
- Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.
- Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
- Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the engineering team.
- Identify obstructions to fiber placement and propose mitigation strategies.
- Read and interpret digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.
- Utilize tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinders.
- Operate electronic devices including iPad, iPhone, laptop, and manage file sharing and email.
- Identify utility types, potential conflicts, and regulatory violations (RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC, etc.).

The position requires frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds, the ability to walk up to three miles over varied terrain, and working outdoors for the majority of the time. Travel is extensive, often requiring up to 100 % travel across multiple states with overnight stays, and work must be performed safely in diverse weather conditions while adhering to OSHA and local safety standards.
- Understand OSP construction techniques.
- 3+ years of experience in fiber‑optic/telecommunications construction.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge of outside plant activities like fiber cable design, pole line construction, and conduit system design.
- Ability to obtain right‑of‑ways and easements and note them on field notes for desktop teams.
- Read and understand as‑built prints, identify conflicts, and select routing for projects.
- Familiarity with GIS, ESRI, and shapefile functionality.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus).
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to pass drug screen and background check.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
