Utility PV Design Engineer

Description

The PV Design Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of photovoltaic (PV) array and battery energy storage system (BESS) site layouts, solar energy modeling, and design support. This role works closely with estimating, preconstruction, and engineering teams to coordinate design packages and ensure successful construction and energization of projects.

• Define site constraints and develop buildable areas for PV arrays.
• Review commercial agreements such as PPAs, interconnection agreements, and service contracts.
• Perform site visits to verify construction aligns with engineering designs.
• Maintain engineering documentation and project records.
• Conduct detailed design package reviews and quality assurance.
• Works in climate-controlled office environments and outdoor field sites.
• Evaluate solar energy projects and meteorological data.
• Perform finance-grade solar resource assessments.
• Develop PV models and recommend modules, inverters, and tracker technologies.
• Support estimating, preconstruction, and business development teams.

Requirements

• Experience with utility-scale solar projects is highly preferred.
• 4–8 years of experience in PV system design and analysis (trade experience may count).
• Proficiency in solar modeling tools, AutoCAD, PVSyst, BlueBeam, and MS Office.
• Ability to work in office and field environments, with up to 30% travel.
• Ability to review, validate, and optimize solar system designs.
• May require prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, bending, and crouching.
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• Familiarity with engineering best practices and industry standards.
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field, preferably from an ABET-accredited program.
• Competence in preparing technical reports, presentations, and recommendations.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
