The Area Supply Chain Manager (ASCM) leads strategic supply chain projects, driving operational excellence across assigned spend categories. The role plans, executes, and delivers initiatives that improve supplier performance, cost competitiveness, and compliance, supporting enterprise-wide goals. The ASCM works directly with Area Leadership and partners with Strategic Sourcing Managers, Corporate Supply Chain Managers, and cross-functional teams to achieve results for the Area and WM.
In project leadership, the ASCM oversees projects from initiation to completion, creating detailed plans, allocating resources, managing timelines, and engaging stakeholders. They develop milestones, monitor progress, and apply mitigation strategies to address risks, often through contractual agreements.
The role involves identifying and facilitating area Requests for Proposal (RFPs), managing project budgets, and driving cost-reduction initiatives. Effective budget oversight ensures projects stay within financial targets while delivering value.
Supplier and stakeholder management requires building strong relationships with suppliers and internal customers, conducting performance reviews, providing feedback, and resolving issues. The ASCM also drives supplier development and continuous-improvement efforts within the region.
Performance measurement entails establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) for projects and suppliers, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting outcomes to Area Leadership and Corporate Supply Chain Directors on a quarterly basis. Findings are presented to support strategic decision-making and process enhancements.
Strategic sourcing and cost management includes developing sourcing strategies for assigned spend categories, leveraging volume to maximize value, and collaborating with corporate and area procurement teams to align initiatives with enterprise objectives. Ongoing efforts focus on reducing costs and ensuring contract compliance.
Cross-functional collaboration is achieved by working closely with other ASCMs, subject-matter experts, and business units to share best practices and improve the value chain. The ASCM also participates in special projects and aligns with site leadership to uncover additional cost-saving and project opportunities.
The ASCM supervises the area supply chain project manager, who reports directly to this role, providing guidance and performance oversight.
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business Administration, Project Management, or a related field (or a high school diploma/GED with four years of relevant experience) and at least five years of applicable work experience. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in project management, financial analysis, purchasing, strategic sourcing, supplier development, and performance measurement, along with strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
The position requires advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adaptability to shifting priorities. The work environment is primarily office-based with occasional travel to supplier or project sites and limited physical demands.
WM is North America’s largest waste-management and environmental-solutions provider, committed to sustainability, innovation, and equal employment opportunity. The company offers accommodations for applicants with disabilities and requires a REAL ID or TSA-approved alternative for travel to federal property.
The expected base salary range across the U.S. is $95,700‑$140,289, complemented by a competitive total compensation package that includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, a stock purchase plan, 401(k) match, and paid vacation, holidays, and personal days (benefits may vary by site).
