Firestorm Labs seeks a Field Service Engineer to install, maintain, and troubleshoot HP 3D printers and related additive manufacturing equipment at customer sites. The role involves direct technical support, training users, and collaborating with engineering and operations teams to ensure system uptime and customer satisfaction. The engineer will act as the company’s face in the field, driving product performance and customer success.
- Install, commission, maintain, and repair 3D printers and related equipment at customer sites.
- Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, hardware repairs, calibrations, and software/firmware updates.
- Service supporting infrastructure such as HVAC and compressed‑air systems.
- Assemble, test, and calibrate mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components.
- Troubleshoot technical issues using multimeters, oscilloscopes, calipers, and wiring diagrams.
- Train customers, end users, and partners on safe equipment use and maintenance best practices.
- Collaborate with engineering on escalated issues and provide field feedback for product improvements.
- Support cross‑functional stakeholders with technical insights during customer interactions and lifecycle management.
- Develop and refine technical service procedures and documentation.
- Maintain accurate service records of repairs, parts usage, and customer interactions.
- Manage escalations from the team and customers, ensuring timely resolution.
- Develop and maintain workflows in platforms such as SharePoint, ARENA, and Jira.

The position is based at Firestorm’s headquarters in San Diego, CA, and requires on‑site presence with a valid driver’s license for off‑site deployments. Travel up to 50% domestically and internationally may be needed for installations, integrations, and testing. Physical demands include lifting up to 30 lb, wearing PPE as required, and tolerating various environmental conditions such as noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals.
Export control compliance requires candidates to be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or otherwise eligible for the necessary ITAR and EAR authorizations. This ensures adherence to U.S. government export regulations for defense‑related technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- At least 5 years operating, maintaining, or repairing complex machinery in lab or manufacturing settings.
- Minimum 3 years of hands‑on field service, technical support, or machine repair experience.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a DoD security clearance (ITAR compliance).
- Strong troubleshooting skills in mechanical, electrical, or pneumatic systems (mastery in one area preferred).
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and calibration devices.
- Excellent collaboration skills across engineering and field operations teams.
- Technical writing ability for documenting systems, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently in dynamic environments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Experience servicing HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printers.
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing technologies (FDM, SLS, SLA).
- Experience with industrial, semiconductor, optics, or precision manufacturing equipment.
- Ability to service, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC and compressed‑air systems in industrial settings.
- Knowledge of 3D printing materials such as thermoplastics, photopolymers, metals, and ceramics.
- Basic CAD skills and ability to read technical drawings.
- Understanding of enterprise networks, OS management, and printer IT integration.
- Experience with service management tools and platforms.
- Military service or startup experience is a plus.
