Drivers operate heavy‑duty trucks equipped with front, side, or rear‑end lift attachments, transporting waste or recyclable containers to disposal, transfer, or recycling facilities once legal load capacity is reached. Commercial drivers provide pick‑up services for containers that may weigh over 1,000 pounds and require precise backing maneuvers. Residential drivers collect household waste, while roll‑off drivers handle large open‑top and compactor containers, often navigating tight industrial environments.
All drivers must operate vehicles in compliance with WM safety rules, OSHA, DOT, and applicable laws, complete pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, and document checks using the DVIR. They are required to report unsafe conditions, incidents, or service interruptions to the Operations Manager or Dispatch, attend scheduled training, and work with management to improve route efficiency. Drivers must safely dump receptacles, keep customer sites clean, follow assigned routes, complete end‑of‑day documentation, and assist fellow drivers as needed.
Required qualifications include a valid Class A or Class B commercial driver’s license with an air‑brake endorsement, at least one year of vehicle operation experience (or equivalent military driving within the past seven years), being at least 18 years old, and legal eligibility to work in the country. Preferred qualifications are a high school diploma or GED.
The role demands physical tasks such as standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, crouching, reaching, handling, sitting, talking, and hearing, with the ability to maneuver containers weighing over 1,000 pounds and perform skilled backing maneuvers.
