The System Protection Leadership oversees all protection systems owned by PG&E, managing teams that specify, design, and apply protective relay packages for reliable transmission and distribution operation. The group conducts fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, documentation maintenance, equipment audits, and provides technical support to other departments and external utilities. It also leads testing procedures, system‑disturbance reviews, and the development of standards, while delivering 24/7 support to operation and maintenance functions. The incumbent drives relay asset strategies to ensure a sustainable and reliable protection and control system.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on system protection and have at least 10 years of protection engineering experience, including supervisory responsibilities. Preferred credentials include a Professional Engineer license, PMP, and Lean Six Sigma certification, as well as extensive experience in transmission engineering, utility operations, and industry committee leadership.
The role requires deep expertise in electrical and transmission engineering, protection schemes, fault analysis tools, and relevant regulatory frameworks (FERC, NERC/CIP, WECC, CPUC, CAISO). Strong leadership, project management, communication, and technical coaching abilities are essential, along with proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with ESC contracts and utility planning, operations, and maintenance.
The role is hybrid, with remote work combined with an assigned office in Oakland, Fresno, or Sacramento within the PG&E service territory, as determined by business needs. Approximately 25‑50 % travel is expected. The hiring leader will finalize the headquarters location based on operational requirements.
PG&E provides a salary range that varies by locality: Bay Area $178,000 – $304,000; California $169,000 – $289,000. Actual pay depends on factors such as skills, education, certifications, experience, market value, and internal equity. The position is also eligible for PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.
