Leadman provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to other craft workers in the work crew, assisting the foreman while functioning as a journeyman.
The leadman assembles, inspects for defects, and repairs boilers, tanks, vats, pressure vessels, and related auxiliaries and ancillaries according to blueprints, using power and hand tools.
- Locate and mark reference points for columns or plates on foundations using geometry tools.
- Attach rigging and signal the crane operator to lift components into position.
- Align structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frames, tanks, or vats using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles.
- Hammer, flame‑cut, file, and grind irregular edges to facilitate fitting.
- Position drums and headers onto supports and secure them by bolting or welding.
- Align water tubes, connect and expand ends to drums and headers with a tube expander.
- Perform minor maintenance and cleaning with tools and equipment.
- Install manholes, handholds, valves, gauges, and feed‑water connections in drums to complete water‑tube boiler assembly.
- Assist in testing assembled vessels by pumping water or gas under pressure and monitoring for leaks.
- Repair boilers or tanks in the field by unbolting or flame‑cutting defective sections, straightening plates, installing new tubes, and welding new sections.
- Fasten and caulk vessel sections using pneumatic fasteners and caulking hammers when required.
- Line fireboxes with refractory brick and blocks as needed.
- Fabricate parts such as stacks, uptakes, and chutes to adapt boilers to installation sites.
- Observe and comply with all safety and project rules; perform other duties as required.
- Apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
- Plan work and select proper tools.
- Compare and identify differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
- Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
- Make decisions based on measurable criteria.

The role typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent combined with relevant field experience. The employee follows established procedures, works under direct supervision, and does not normally exercise independent judgment, reporting to a supervisor or manager.
The position demands frequent standing, walking, and occasional sitting, with the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull loads up to 50 lb and perform tasks such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and fingering on a regular basis.
- Bolt or arc‑weld structures and sections together.
- Bolt or weld casing sections, uptakes, stacks, baffles, and fabricated parts such as chutes, air heaters, fan stands, feeding tubes, catwalks, ladders, coal hoppers, and safety hatches to the frame.
