The Traffic Project Engineer will solve complex traffic challenges and enhance mobility in urban, suburban, and rural areas throughout New England. The role spans the full project lifecycle—from conceptual planning and corridor studies to signal design, traffic impact assessments, multimodal analysis, and construction support—while mentoring junior staff and fostering a learning culture.
- Conduct traffic engineering analyses (capacity, signal timing, crash, LOS) using tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, HCS.
- Develop traffic control, signal, and signing/striping plans per MUTCD, AASHTO, and state DOT guidelines.
- Prepare technical reports, traffic impact studies, and documentation for public and agency review.
- Coordinate permitting and stakeholder engagement with DOTs, MPOs, and municipalities.
- Uphold QA/QC processes and stay current on ITS and best practices.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (structural, highway, environmental engineers).
- Support project phases including development, permitting, bidding, and construction.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables under project manager guidance.
- Conduct site inspections and liaise with municipal agencies, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Represent BETA professionally, cultivating client relationships.
- Assist with proposal and business development initiatives.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to QA/QC efforts.

- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
- 5–10 years of traffic engineering experience (studies, signal design, corridor analysis, modeling, control plans).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Synchro, SimTraffic, and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of MUTCD, AASHTO, and DOT design requirements.
- Strong communication and technical writing abilities.
- Ability to collect field data, conduct asset inspections, and perform physical field work (lift up to 40 lb, work in all weather conditions).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- OSHA certifications (10‑Construction, 40‑HAZWOPER, Confined Space Entry, etc.) preferred.
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification preferred.
- IMSA Traffic Inspection Certification preferred.
- Experience with VISSIM preferred.
