The Heavy Duty Mechanic/Commercial Transport Mechanic will primarily service the fleet at the fully‑equipped Garage in Manitoba Yards, supporting a staff of about 150 tradespeople. The role involves working with the Fleet and Manufacturing Services team to perform quality, timely work on a diverse range of equipment, including automobiles, light‑to‑heavy trucks, trailers, and various heavy‑duty machines. The busy environment offers a variety of tasks across small and large equipment.
Candidates must hold a Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.) with Inter‑Provincial Red Seal endorsement, as well as an authorized Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate (CVIC). Red Seal certification is preferred, and a minimum of Grade 10 education supplemented by relevant technical courses is required.
Applicants need thorough knowledge of automotive and heavy‑duty mechanical practices, including braking systems and safety hazards. They must be able to perform complex electrical and mechanical tasks on motorcycles, vehicles, heavy‑duty and marine equipment, interpret manufacturer instructions, requisition parts, supervise staff, and inspect City vehicles for roadworthiness. Physical strength, agility, and superior mechanical aptitude are also essential.
A current Class 5 BC driver’s licence (or higher) with a satisfactory National Safety Code driving record is required. The record must show no more than nine points in five years (no more than three points in a single year) and no more than one preventable work‑related accident in any year.
Applicants must submit copies of their Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport T.Q., Red Seal endorsement (if applicable), CVIC, and a recent ICBC Commercial Driving Records Abstract and Insurance and Claims History for the past five years. Those with less than five years of BC driving history must also provide out‑of‑province documents.
The City supports continued education and offers training opportunities such as dealer training on newly purchased fleet equipment. Employees are encouraged to develop their skills, knowledge, and abilities through available programs.
The position is classified under Engineering Services (1300), affiliated with CUPE 1004 N/Pks, and is a regular full‑time role with two openings starting February 2026. Salary is Pay Grade GR‑377 at $50.22 per hour plus a $4.00 per hour shift premium.
