The Innovation Technical Manager II role sits within Shaw’s Corporate Innovation team, which partners with business units to uncover value‑creation opportunities by exploring new materials, technologies, and experiences that shape the future of flooring and beyond. The team informs strategy, guides strategic risk‑taking, and embeds innovation processes across the organization.
In this position you will take ownership of technical discovery, prototyping, and experimentation, independently leading portions of innovation projects and turning early‑stage ideas into tangible prototypes. You will coordinate cross‑functional teams to validate desirability, feasibility, and viability, and accelerate early‑stage work to strengthen Shaw’s ability to test, learn, and bring forward new opportunities.
- Scan and evaluate emerging technologies, translating them into innovation platforms and prioritizing feasibility and strategic fit
- Build low‑fidelity prototypes in the Shaw Makerspace to visualize and test new concepts
- Schedule and execute small‑scale trials and material experiments with manufacturing facilities
- Design and conduct technical experiments to validate assumptions, manufacturability, and early performance data
- Define learning goals, timelines, and success criteria for project workstreams
- Manage day‑to‑day execution of innovation projects and lead defined portions
- Facilitate collaboration across R&D, Design, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Marketing, and external partners
- Document technical results, capture learnings, and synthesize insights for teams and leadership
- Apply frameworks such as Stage‑Gate, Design Thinking, Lean Startup, and Jobs‑to‑Be‑Done to guide experimentation
- Support ideation sessions and problem‑framing workshops for early discovery
- Prepare project updates, dashboards, and summaries to communicate status and recommendations
- Mentor Innovation Technical Manager I and interns with hands‑on support
- Develop innovation tools, templates, and best practices to improve team effectiveness
- Lead workstreams that meaningfully advance innovation projects
- Rapidly prototype to help teams visualize possibilities and speed decision‑making
- Design experiments that generate credible learnings, reduce risk, and clarify pathways
- Earn stakeholder trust by coordinating teams, managing timelines, and keeping work moving
- Mentor junior team members and assume increasing strategic ownership

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in a technical or design discipline, 3‑5+ years of experience in innovation or product development, strong organizational and communication skills, and proficiency with tools such as Microsoft 365, Smartsheet, Adobe Suite, and CAD. Shaw values strategic planning, results‑driven execution, innovation, and trusted relationships, and offers a stable 8‑hour non‑rotating shift with equal‑opportunity employment for all protected groups.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Design, Business, or a related field; advanced technical training is a plus
- Possess 3–5+ years of experience in innovation, product development, engineering, R&D, or a similar function
- Demonstrate experience with prototyping, pilot trials, or technical experimentation
- Exhibit strong organizational abilities and capacity to manage multiple priorities independently
- Show solid communication and interpersonal skills for cross‑functional collaboration
- Possess curiosity, a growth mindset, and quick learning of new tools, materials, and technologies
- Be proficient with Microsoft 365, Smartsheet, Adobe Suite, CAD tools, or makerspace technologies
