The engineer will take part in project‑management activities such as budget oversight and supply‑chain coordination to deliver effective asset maintenance and renewal programmes. Responsibilities include developing early‑stage solutions, preparing survey briefs, managing structural surveys, monitoring assessment work and overseeing the delivery of maintenance and improvement options. The role also involves undertaking structural reviews and supporting the region’s asset‑led forward programme through scheme development, customer‑focused designs and technical specifications.

National Highways offers an excellent opportunity for a Structures Engineer to join the Structures team within Operations, overseeing more than 3,000 structures across the North East of England. The role involves supporting the management of structural assets by identifying maintenance and improvement needs, developing schemes, and enhancing long‑term infrastructure resilience. It may be based in Wakefield, Darlington or Leeds on a hybrid basis and requires a full driving licence with no more than three points.
Candidates should hold a degree or HND in a relevant discipline (or equivalent) and be working towards professional membership. Relevant experience includes structural studies, renewal design or assessments, and an ability to work within allocated budgets (desirable). Strong stakeholder management, customer‑focused communication and knowledge of CDM 2015 and infrastructure standards are also required.
