Family-owned, fully integrated global engineering, architecture, construction and automation firm.
The MEP Unit Manager will oversee comprehensive MEP delivery for projects within the assigned market, supporting strategic design development during pre‑construction and design phases while also managing tactical execution to ensure financial performance, risk mitigation, relationship management, team development, and collaboration.
In the tactical role, the manager works with project management teams to understand customer needs, translates MEP strategy into actionable plans, ensures effective communication, customizes solutions, provides day‑to‑day oversight, facilitates collaboration among MEP subcontractors and other disciplines, and supports problem solving and decision making.
During pre‑construction, the manager assists the MEP Unit Leader in shaping the MEP strategy for projects up to $200 MM+, gathers owner information, coordinates internal departments, delivers detailed MEP packages with clear scope and pricing, and presents the MEP approach to customers.
As the design development liaison, the manager coordinates MEP consultants and subcontractors, reviews design documents for compliance, and works with the MEP Group Leader to identify sourcing and procurement opportunities that add value.
Financial success responsibilities include communicating progress to project executives, operating within budget constraints, participating in material and subcontract purchasing, reviewing change orders for accuracy, and supporting the red‑file process to maintain budget integrity.
Risk management duties involve understanding contract terms, developing comprehensive risk plans for MEP disciplines, regularly assessing and adjusting strategies, proactively identifying challenges, and providing clear problem‑solving guidance to protect schedule, quality, and cost.
The manager serves as the primary point of contact for MEP matters, collaborates on communication and relationship management plans, exemplifies Gray’s core values, bridges customers, consultants, and internal teams, and ensures smooth workflow during team transitions.
Team member development includes monitoring team cohesion, creating action plans for MEP resource issues, mentoring and training project management team members, and aligning all activities with Gray’s vision, values, and mission.
Collaboration and administrative authority require maintaining regular communication with the MEP Unit Leader and other leaders, coordinating cross‑functional teams, fostering a cooperative environment, and advising on subcontract agreements, early payments, and change orders.
Gray Construction is seeking an experienced MEP Unit Manager to join its Data Center Market team in Dallas, Texas; Lexington, Kentucky; or Atlanta, Georgia.
Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) and at least ten years of MEP leadership on design‑build or hard‑bid projects, expertise in various contracting methods, proven profit‑margin improvement, deep technical knowledge of engineering and design, and experience managing large‑scale, complex projects.
Required skills encompass strong written and verbal communication, ability to analyze technical and financial information, basic business mathematics, problem‑solving ability, proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, email, and preferably scheduling or estimating software.
Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, with a typical office environment and occasional overtime.
While the position has no direct supervisory staff, it requires strong leadership to direct cross‑departmental and external team members.
The ideal candidate is energetic, self‑motivated, enjoys teamwork, and seeks professional development; the role does not offer visa sponsorship and provides equal‑opportunity employment.
