Field Collector

Description

The Field Collector provides supportive engineering services by collecting detailed telecommunications information on‑site and validating existing outside plant (OSP) designs for aerial, buried, and underground fiber networks, including conduit, handholes, building entrances, and riser facilities.

• Identify, photograph, and document detailed information of required facilities, including cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes, and other OSP infrastructure.
• Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances from OSP facilities to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
• Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.
• Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
• Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the engineering team.
• Identify relevant obstructions to fiber placement and provide a proposed mitigation strategy.
• Read and interpret digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.
• Utilize tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finder, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinder.
• Operate electronic devices (iPad, iPhone, laptop) for file sharing and email.
• Update completion dates and relevant information in Insite related to the job.
• Collaborate with Engineering and Field Engineering teams to complete tasks and resolve client issues.
• Maintain regular, punctual, and predictable attendance to support team and customer needs.
• Travel extensively; work on‑site for numerous projects across states, up to 100 % travel, including overnight stays.
• Follow OSHA/State/Local safety standards and work safely with or without supervision.

Requirements

• Demonstrate understanding of OSP construction techniques.
• 2+ years experience in fiber‑optic/telecommunications construction.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of outside plant activities (fiber cable design, pole line construction, conduit system design) and make‑ready issues.
• Knowledge of obtaining right‑of‑ways and easements and noting them on field notes.
• Ability to read as‑built prints, identify conflicts with existing OSP facilities, and select routing of lines and equipment.
• Familiarity with GIS, ESRI, and shapefile functionality.
• Ability to identify utility types, potential conflicts, and violations based on RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC standards.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus).
• Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, acceptable driving record; able to pass drug screen and background check.
• Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to learn new technical systems and tools.
• Ability to resolve problems using standard practices and judgment within policies.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lb.
• Work outdoors ~95 % of the time and in poor weather conditions (heat, snow, rain, wind).
• Walk up to 3 mi per day on varied terrain.

Compensation includes a base pay range of $19–$26.50 USD, performance and referral bonuses, production incentives, and tool/equipment stipends.
