Description

Under general supervision the apprentice performs repairs and construction on gas mains and services, and installs, maintains, and operates domestic, commercial and industrial gas appliances and related piping. Typical duties include tapping, stopping leaks, purging and energizing lines, regulating and metering equipment, and inspecting installations.

The apprentice may also fabricate and sketch piping tie‑ins, correct field sketches, and direct a junior fitter or crew members for tasks such as equipment operation, digging, and traffic control. A substitution bonus is awarded when the apprentice leads a crew of at least two other fitters for four hours or more.

• Perform repairs and construction on gas mains and services under supervision.
• Tap, penetrate, stop, and repair leaks in energized gas lines.
• Purge and energize gas mains, regulate, meter, and operate related equipment.
• Maintain, operate, and repair odorizing, filtering, and regulating equipment.
• Inspect main and service installations.
• Fabricate and sketch piping tie‑ins and simple gas service replacements in the field.
• Direct the work of one junior fitter or additional crew members as needed.
• Cut services and install or remove gas and electric meters.
• Operate equipment as a driver/operator when required.
• Comply with the Memorandum of Agreement governing gas training and progression.
• Work extra or irregular hours and remain alert to hazards.

Requirements
