Under general supervision the apprentice performs repairs and construction on gas mains and services, and installs, maintains, and operates domestic, commercial and industrial gas appliances and related piping. Typical duties include tapping, stopping leaks, purging and energizing lines, regulating and metering equipment, and inspecting installations.
The apprentice may also fabricate and sketch piping tie‑ins, correct field sketches, and direct a junior fitter or crew members for tasks such as equipment operation, digging, and traffic control. A substitution bonus is awarded when the apprentice leads a crew of at least two other fitters for four hours or more.
