The Technical Designer role drives technical innovation, integration, documentation, and execution of architectural and engineering design intent, aligning with project scope, program, and budget. Partnering with senior designers, project managers, and architects, the Technical Designer co‑leads the project from design development through construction administration.
Key responsibilities include leading code review and analysis, researching materials and systems, coordinating specifications, and producing construction documentation that meets firm standards. The role also manages quality control, implements the Quality Management System, and supports sustainable performance tracking for AIA 2030 reporting.
Leadership duties involve actively leading the project team, supervising, training, and mentoring staff, and participating in talent acquisition through resume reviews and interviews. The Technical Designer champions sustainable strategies, contributes to new service development, and ensures procedures protect SOM from financial and legal risk.
Candidates must hold a professional architecture degree, be licensed (LEED or similar accreditation preferred), and have at least eight years of relevant experience. Required skills include strong communication, proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, parametric and rendering tools, Adobe Suite, and Google Workspace, as well as a solid understanding of sustainable design principles.
