Relay Technician II

Description

The Relay Technician II performs electrical testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of relays in power stations with minimal supervision. Duties include using relay test equipment and tools to test various relay types inside electrical substations.

• Lead safety culture and guide team members.
• Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relaying equipment.
• Develop written procedures for commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relays.
• Perform function testing of substation control circuits, transformers, and circuit breakers.
• Create relay macros and testing routines to verify protection and control designs.
• Conduct end‑to‑end relay testing using software and analyze fault‑type operations.
• Review relay settings and logic equations to confirm system operation per design.
• Design testing and isolation procedures for outage scenarios.
• Install and test communications such as SCADA, GOOSE, Modbus, and fiber.
• Perform circuit analysis of protective relays, instrument transformers, and AC/DC systems.
• Troubleshoot distribution and transmission control circuits.

Requirements

• Pass pre‑employment drug screen and criminal background check.
• Maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record and be willing to travel and work overtime.
• Demonstrate hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations.
• Possess knowledge of relay test software.
• Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills (preferred).
• Have experience with circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment (preferred).
• Hold a bachelor's or associate degree in electrical/electronic technology, military experience, or a 4‑year engineering degree (preferred).
• Obtain NETA II certification (preferred).
• Ability to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and lift up to 70 lb.
