Associate Director Civil Engineering - Data Centres

Description

The Associate Director – Civil Engineering will oversee the full life‑cycle of data‑centre projects—from site assessment and master‑planning to detailed design and construction support—while expanding AECOM’s civil‑engineering offering in the hyperscale and co‑location market across EMEA.

Located within a multidisciplinary civil‑engineering business unit, the role collaborates with ground, structural, mechanical, electrical, process engineers, architects, project managers and environmental specialists in the UK and abroad, acting as an ambassador for AECOM and mentoring junior staff.

• Provide civil‑engineering technical leadership and design governance for data‑centre and critical‑infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with AECOM standards and regulations.
• Lead, review and approve designs and specifications for site development, earthworks, drainage, pavements, access and utility infrastructure.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams—including ground, electrical, mechanical, structural engineers, architects and environmental consultants—to deliver the data‑centre project portfolio.
• Support client engagement, business development, asset reviews and expansion or upgrade strategies.
• Mentor and develop civil engineers, enhancing AECOM’s technical capability within the data‑centre sector.

Requirements

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline with strong infrastructure design experience for data‑centre clients.
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng, MICE or equivalent) or demonstrated chartered‑level professional standing.
• Proven record of leading complex civil‑infrastructure projects, preferably in data‑centres, mission‑critical, industrial or large‑scale developments.
• In‑depth knowledge of planning, highways, drainage and utility approval processes, and experience liaising with local authorities and utility providers.
• Experience acting as Design Lead/Technical Authority in large multidisciplinary teams, providing governance, technical assurance and risk management.
• Understanding of BIM modelling, processes and collaborative platforms.
