Director of Engineering

Description

The Director of Engineering is responsible for all administrative, financial, and operational aspects of the engineering division, ensuring the safe and profitable operation of the hotel.

• Supervise and train engineering staff on customer service, SOPs, and loss prevention.
• Create, approve, and post staff schedules following Highgate standards.
• Develop and manage the department’s annual budget and financial forecasts.
• Participate in monthly profit/loss review meetings.
• Maintain property, equipment, grounds, and assets in an acceptable state of repair.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, including the ADA.
• Implement a preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment.
• Inspect, test, and certify emergency and life‑safety systems per standards.
• Handle room maintenance requests promptly and courteously.
• Respond immediately to alarms, assess causes, and report findings to the Front Desk.
• Assist with special projects and renovations as needed.
• Participate in energy‑conservation initiatives.
• Review guest and meeting‑planner comment cards to address issues quickly.
• Administer all vendor contracts related to engineering.
• Support and participate in Highgate Hotel programs and Safety Committee.
• Multitask, prioritize departmental functions, and meet deadlines.
• Maintain regular attendance, adhere to scheduling requirements, and wear appropriate identification.
• Uphold high standards of personal appearance and grooming.
• Identify productivity improvements, solve problems proactively, and maintain confidentiality of information.

Requirements

• Require at least 5 years of progressive facilities‑management experience in hotels or related fields, or equivalent education and experience.
• Hold a high school diploma or equivalent; a college degree is preferred.
• Possess a stationary engineer’s license if required by local code.
• Demonstrate HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler, and general maintenance expertise.
• Ability to lift/exert up to 100 lb occasionally, 50 lb frequently, and 20 lb continuously.
• Maintain a warm, friendly demeanor and effective verbal and written communication with staff and guests.
