Sr. P&C Designer - Iron Mountain, MI

Description

As a member of the Engineering Services Team, the Senior Protection & Control Designer will create drawing packages for utility customers, including one‑lines, schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules. The role involves applying technical and functional knowledge to generate high‑quality drawings and supporting additional design tasks during peak periods.

• Produce yellow‑line schematics, one‑lines, and front‑view layouts that align with scoping documents to ensure drawing quality.
• Generate cable lists and connection drawings for field equipment based on provided schematics.
• Develop project‑specific schematic drawings using generic customer standard schematics.
• Create basic to intermediate one‑line diagrams from generic customer standard one‑lines.
• Revise existing customer schematic and one‑line diagrams to accommodate retrofits of new equipment.
• Prepare demolition drawings as required.
• Track project completion status and update associated documentation.
• Calculate voltage drop for cables and wires.
• Review client‑provided as‑built drawings (FMPs) and implement necessary changes.
• Specify protection & control (P&C) materials and produce bill‑of‑materials (BOM) for projects.
• Assist in developing scoping and estimating documents.
• Communicate and collaborate effectively with OEC firms and clients on ongoing projects.
• Support field construction crews by answering project‑related questions.
• Train and mentor junior P&C Designers.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent.
• Direct technical experience in a related field.
• Strong ability to read and interpret electrical drawings.
• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
• Solid understanding of electrical circuits.
• Capability to create one‑line diagrams from scoping documents.
• Ability to develop schematic diagrams from one‑lines and scoping documents.
• Skill in building cable schedules from wiring diagrams.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong multitasking ability to meet project deadlines.
• Effective communication with OEC firms and clients.
• Working knowledge of CAD software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation.
• Extensive knowledge of protection and control principles in the power industry.
• Experience using PDF editing tools (e.g., Bluebeam, Adobe) for markup.
• Familiarity with creating and managing project documentation.
