Senior Planner

Description

Senior Planners will lead and manage strategic initiatives, align projects with regulatory requirements and budgets, and set policy direction for sustainable development. They will collaborate with stakeholders, conduct demographic and environmental research, facilitate public meetings, and produce GIS‑based maps, master plans, and entitlement drawings. Project management duties include budgeting, scheduling, proposals, and billing, while also mentoring junior staff.

• Lead and manage strategic planning initiatives aligned with client goals, regulations, and budgets
• Set policy and guidelines to support sustainable community development
• Collaborate with clients, government officials, developers, and community groups to build consensus
• Conduct research and analysis of demographics, land use, and environmental impacts
• Facilitate public meetings, workshops, and hearings to gather community feedback
• Utilize GIS to analyze spatial data and produce detailed planning maps
• Develop and review master plans, site evaluation studies, and entitlement drawings
• Provide technical support for condemnation projects and prepare comprehensive reports and presentations
• Manage project budgets, schedules, proposals, and billing
• Mentor and train junior planners and planning technicians
• Maintain expert knowledge of regulatory compliance and sustainability practices

Requirements

The company is seeking a Senior Planner for its Hartford, CT office to shape community futures through balanced planning that integrates environmental sustainability, economic viability, and client goals. The role requires extensive interaction with clients, public officials, developers, and community members, demanding strong leadership and communication skills.

Candidates must hold a BS in Planning, Environmental Studies, Architecture, or a related field and possess a minimum of 14 years of planning experience (16 years preferred). Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred. The position offers a salary range of $95,000–$138,000, annual bonuses, stock options, comprehensive health benefits, generous PTO, tuition reimbursement, and a retirement savings plan.

• Proficient in ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, SketchUp, and MS Office
• Demonstrate strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Travel up to 15 % of the time, including occasional overnight stays
• Hold a BS in Planning, Environmental Studies, Architecture, or related field (or equivalent associate degree)
• Minimum 14 years (preferred 16 years) planning experience; AICP certification preferred
