What you would be doing
  • Signs and seals exhibits attesting to full code compliance of all documents.
  • Coordinate among the engineering disciplines and between drawings and specification, to ensure compliance with code and SCA standard.
  • May assist in reviews completed by plan examiner, and take on special projects for the Chief plan examiner or Director.
  • Issues written objections based on plan review to the design professionals (such as engineers and architects) and works with them to resolve the objections to obtain approval from the Division.
  • Examines plans and applications for compliance submitted by applicant Architects and Engineers.
  • Generates requirements for permits, close out and required inspections and may direct staff in the processing of documents, preparing reports, researching data and interpreting regulations.
  • May train newly assigned staff, as well as outside consultants, on SCA standards and procedures.
  • Performs design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects.
  • Provides mentoring for professional development of junior level employees.
  • Assists in the Department of Buildings (DOB) Permits and DOB Job Close-Out phases by reviewing relevant documents and directing relevant personnel.
  • Represents the BCC Division as needed in meetings with in house staff as well as outside consulting firms to insure proper procedures are followed.
  • Communicates with other stakeholders to coordinate work activities, including attending meetings and providing expert knowledge in building code.
  • Address RFI's, perform site visits to meet with stakeholders, and review shop drawings to ensure conformance with design.
  • Monitor the progress of the construction phase of the project.
  • May coordinate the work of consulting firms and/or individual consultants on projects.
  • May be required to sign, seal and file engineering drawings.
  • Perform design review of work for engineering portions of multiple projects.
  • Perform review for either Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) or Line Projects.
  • Provide overall coordination for in-house design projects.
  • Prepare field reports.
  • May direct Associate Engineers/Architects and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, and/or Technical Inspectors working on several less complex design and construction projects, such as new schools, modernizations, additions, leased space, and CIP projects.
  • Perform and/or supervises the preparation of scope, pre-schematic, schematic, preliminary and construction documents including reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Utilizes Bluebeam and One Drive application for examining marking up drawings and returning to applicant electronically.
  • Reviews new building applications for constructions logistics, temporary egress, public protection and other NYC agency approvals.
  • May function as a project leader reporting to an Engineer/Architect B or Engineer/Architect C, Managing Architect, Managing Engineer, or Director to plan and coordinate work with other Engineers and Architects.
  • Interprets zoning and building codes and may review and resolve interpretation concerns.
  • Work with a wide range of technical, professional, managerial and support personnel as well as outside consultants, contractors, vendors, and various government agencies.
  • Works in the Building Code Compliance Division to ensure compliance with all building codes, zoning resolutions and applicable local laws.
  • May operate as a project leader on capital improvement projects.
  • Works as a project leader on multiple, complex construction projects and major design and exploration programs to plan, assign, direct, manage, and supervise the work of stakeholders such as Engineers, Architects, Quality Assurance Specialists, Technical Inspectors, Associate Engineers, Associate Architects, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, resolving any problems that occur.
  • Design and review construction documents, per applicable construction codes, for Capital Improvement Projects.
  • May review zoning waiver requests and code reconsiderations and directs applicants in resolving highly complex zoning and code issues.
  • Utilizes the NYC DOB NOW system for approvals permits and inspections.
  • Ensures compliance to codes, standards, and that the project is completed on schedule.
  • Researches solutions to building codes and zoning issues and creates reports.
  • Assists in preparing new design standards and procedures.
  • Supervise the review of contractor’s submittals.
  • May act as a team leader in a department to train and develop internal staff in a specific engineering discipline.
  • Maintain and develops general understanding of architectural and engineering principles.
  • Perform design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects.
