The EHS Manager is responsible for developing a safety culture on the project that anticipates construction risk and mitigates hazards to prevent injury to personnel or damage to the structure. This role serves as the primary decision maker for project safety, compliance, risk control, claims management, and environmental planning.
Daily activities include promoting, developing, implementing, verifying, and improving risk‑reduction through EHS programs, incident reporting, trend analysis, team cohesion, training, and craft recognition initiatives. The manager also creates methods to evaluate team cohesiveness, EHS compliance, and construction planning effectiveness.
A successful EHS Manager develops practical, effective policies and initiatives aimed at an Injury Free Environment, anticipating improvement areas and introducing best practices for work sites and functions. They communicate with all project levels, subcontractor personnel, owner representatives, and company management to build a culture of constant vigilance.
Collaboration with Superintendents, Project Managers, Project Engineers, and EHS Engineers is essential to integrate schedule, EHS, and quality during construction. The manager works with supervisors and other management personnel to implement policies that comply with company standards, customer requirements, and regulatory agencies such as DOT, OSHA, EPA, and MSHA.
The role involves analyzing work requirements for personnel, equipment, and materials, proposing changes to increase safety while maintaining efficiency, and managing the Safety Orientation program and training tracking. The manager ensures all required forms (e.g., OSHA 300) are filed and that appropriate personal protective equipment is provided and used correctly.
Participation in injury accident investigations, performing risk analyses, and formulating risk‑management plans are key duties. The manager partners on claim resolution efforts, coordinates with HR and workers' compensation carriers to expedite employee return‑to‑work, and tracks EHS successes, updates, and incidents for clients and management.
Required qualifications include an Associate, BS, or MS degree (technical or GSP preferred) or equivalent experience, 8‑12 years of EHS management in construction, knowledge of OSHA regulations, an OSHA 30‑Hour Construction certificate, strong communication skills, and a valid driver’s license. Preferred qualifications are CHST, OSHT, or equivalent certifications and OSHA 500 series courses.
Physical requirements involve working on active construction sites, standing or walking for long periods, using standard office equipment, and occasionally moving equipment up to 50 lb. Travel to company offices and job sites is required, and all positions involve some level of driving.
