Groundmen support their crew by ensuring safety for themselves and others, assisting line‑workers to meet project objectives, and joining storm‑restoration efforts when needed. They operate vehicles and equipment professionally and continuously pursue technical and leadership training.
In overhead powerline construction, Groundmen work safely on both energized and de‑energized systems, inspect PPE and rubber goods, and properly use personal protective equipment. They string overhead wire, set poles and anchors, and assist with installing transformers, arrestors, cutouts, cross‑arms, insulators, switches, and switchgear. Additional duties include replacing fuses, clearing faulted circuits, maintaining vehicles and tools, operating radios, and applying basic rigging, knot‑tying, and voltage identification skills.
The role demands regular standing, walking, climbing wooden or steel structures, and frequent lifting or moving of loads up to or exceeding 50 lb. Workers must have adequate close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus.
Groundmen work outdoors and may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, mechanical vibration, loud noise, and extreme weather conditions. The job requires adaptability to diverse construction sites and environments.
Candidates must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of hire, communicate effectively in reading and writing, and be able to travel long distances on short notice. They must be able to lift more than 50 lb, work overtime, and accept irregular schedules including weekends and holidays.
