The intern will work with the System Protection Engineering team to support electric power system modeling and perform basic short‑circuit studies. Additional duties include analyzing lightning data for outage events, shadowing engineers on daily tasks, and learning laboratory equipment testing procedures.
Key activities involve supporting event analysis, short‑circuit modeling for new and retired assets, laboratory testing of relays for firmware updates, and short‑circuit coordination for distribution feeders. The role also assists in managing the protective‑relay database by executing queries and verifying field‑collected materials.
Applicants must be current college students, at least sophomore level by May 2026, enrolled in an ABET‑accredited program pursuing an engineering degree (electrical, mechanical, civil, or chemical). Candidates need to be able to commute to Xcel’s corporate office in Denver, Colorado, and meet the full‑time summer work requirement.
Preferred qualifications include a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, completion of at least one year of undergraduate coursework covering basic circuits, and proficiency with spreadsheet software.
