The role focuses on engineering design for primary plant in Eastern Green Link (EGL) projects, delivering specifications and detailed designs for substation primary plant systems, and overseeing technical assessment of tender submissions. You will assure EPC contractor designs, lead a group of design engineers for HVDC converter stations, and support the preparation of accurate project budgets.
Providing overall primary‑plant technical leadership, you will advise design engineers, support site delivery teams during construction and commissioning, and contribute to updating primary‑plant equipment standards. You will also drive technical initiatives such as BIM, digital substation tools and new engineering approaches across the transmission industry.
The successful candidate must have at least ten years of transmission primary‑plant design experience (33 kV‑400 kV AC and HVDC), an engineering qualification (BSc/BEng) or equivalent, and preferably Chartered Engineer status. Proven leadership, line‑management, strong communication and presentation skills, and the ability to operate under pressure in a dynamic environment are essential.
Principal Engineer – Primary Plant (Edinburgh) – Salary £69,200 to £86,500 + up to 20% bonus, car allowance, private family medical cover and double‑matched pension.
