As part of HDR’s Architecture practice, you will help design and deliver spaces that advance community well‑being worldwide, from healing environments and learning spaces to research labs, civic landmarks, and infrastructure. Our multidisciplinary teams of architects, planners, designers, and technical experts solve complex design challenges with creativity, curiosity, and collaboration, emphasizing resilience, sustainability, and innovative building technologies.
The West Region Design Director will lead design excellence while balancing management goals and project budgets, mentor junior staff, and shape the future of our built environment. This role also involves attracting and retaining top design talent and actively participating in professional design organizations.
- Develop highly innovative, creative, integrated, and effective design solutions.
- Maintain a strong design reputation demonstrated by awards, publications, education, and client references.
- Guide initial design concepts from pursuit through successful project completion across multiple projects.
- Teach and train designers and interdisciplinary teams in design excellence and HDR’s Design Philosophy.
- Mentor and develop junior design staff, inspiring pursuit of design excellence.
- Lead design efforts, partnering with global design director, office management, project management, and AEP discipline leaders.
- Identify, attract, and retain key design talent; develop hiring strategies for senior and junior staff.
- Participate actively in local, national, or international professional design organizations.

- Master’s degree in Architecture or a closely related field (preferred).
- Experience in health, science, higher education, or civic sectors is strongly considered (preferred).
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a closely related field (required).
- Minimum 15 years leading design on varied project scales and complexities (required).
- Active professional architectural registration (required).
- Proven record of winning project pursuits and maintaining strong client relationships (required).
- Experience leading collaborative, iterative design processes with clients and colleagues (required).
- Interest or experience in sustainable building design (required).
- Demonstrated experience with GSA’s Design Excellence Program (Public Buildings Service) (required).
- Strong leadership and mentoring abilities (required).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (required).
- Ability to lead teams and deliver client presentations (required).
- Capability to collaborate and integrate with existing teams (required).
- Commitment to actively participating in HDR’s employee‑owned culture (required).
