Office Location: Fargo, ND. Primary responsibilities include managing a team of engineers, technicians and support staff on water resource projects from the planning phase through design and construction. A Lead Engineer shall be capable of independently managing projects and collaboratively contributing to the design and development of project plans and specifications while working with and mentoring project team members. Lead Engineers typically report to a sector leader or principal of the firm. Additional responsibilities include general marketing of the firm and various business development activities.
Typical tasks include delivering professional engineering services such as studies, planning, design, specifications, reports, construction observation, and project management. The Lead Engineer communicates regularly with clients, supervisors, and team members, providing updates throughout project phases, and attends company, project, and client meetings. They lead proposal preparation, participate in interviews to secure work, and expand business development responsibilities under senior mentorship. The role requires independent judgment, directing technicians, coordinating with other engineering departments on multi‑discipline projects, and adhering to company policies, safety standards, and ethical practices.
The position demands both independent and collaborative work, participation in professional organizations and community leadership, occasional travel and overtime during construction season, and compliance with physical requirements such as standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 lb.
Qualifications include a B.S. in Civil or Environmental Engineering, a PE license (or ability to obtain within 6‑12 months), and 5‑15 years of civil engineering experience in water resources and storm‑water management. Required skills comprise strong project and construction management, excellent communication, detail orientation, self‑motivation, and proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with watershed modeling, pump station design, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and a valid driver’s license are preferred.
