Senior Cable System Design Engineer

Description

The Senior Cable System Design Engineer role is part of the Transmission & Distribution team, responsible for delivering cable system projects for transmission system operators, distribution network operators, and private developers. The position involves working on projects from feasibility and concept stages through detailed design, installation supervision, and commissioning of on‑shore infrastructure, supporting the energy transition.

The role offers the chance to collaborate with civil, structural, substation, and overhead line teams, engage with manufacturers and suppliers, and participate in client meetings, technical workshops, and multidisciplinary coordination. It also includes supporting third‑party inspections, FAT/SAT, and ensuring compliance with IEC, CIGRÉ, National Grid TPs, and other international standards.

• Deliver end‑to‑end cable engineering packages from feasibility and concept through detailed design, installation support, and commissioning.
• Review complex HVAC and HVDC cable system designs, including route development and burial risk assessments.
• Perform cable rating and system studies such as ampacity, short‑circuit forces, thermal stability, and EMI analysis.
• Conduct cable pulling, jointing, cleating, and installation feasibility studies.
• Collaborate with civil, structural, substation, and overhead line teams to provide integrated solutions.
• Support third‑party inspections and FAT/SAT activities during installation and commissioning.
• Liaise with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors to verify compliance with IEC, CIGRÉ, National Grid TPs, and other standards.
• Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, HAZID/HAZOP sessions, and multidisciplinary coordination.

Requirements

Candidates should have strong experience in cable system design engineering for HV/EHV transmission and distribution projects, including FEED work, and be familiar with regulated, quality‑assured environments such as National Grid. Knowledge of on‑shore cable routing, pulling, burial risk assessments, electromagnetic, thermal, and stability analysis, as well as experience with tools like CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, and GIS, is required.

Desirable qualifications include a minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, NG Certified – CDAE, and chartered engineer status (CEng) or progress towards it.

• Strong cable system design engineering experience for HV/EHV transmission and distribution projects (FEED required).
• Experience in regulated, quality‑assured environments, preferably with National Grid.
• Proficiency in on‑shore cable routing, pulling, mechanical forces, burial risk assessments, and protection strategies.
• Expertise in electromagnetic, thermal, and stability analysis, as well as cable cleating and short‑circuit restraints.
• Hands‑on experience with Quality, Inspection & Test (QIT) of cables and related systems.
• Familiarity with IEC, CIGRÉ, and NG‑TP standards.
• Skilled in using CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, and mechanical simulation tools.
• Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or related field; NG Certified – CDAE desirable; Chartered Engineer status (or pursuit) advantageous.
