Under general supervision, the Meter Reader performs a variety of duties related to customer service and meter reading. The role involves reading and recording water meter readings along an assigned route to initiate billing for utility customers. The employee receives work from and reports to the Revenue & Billing Supervisor, but works independently while on the route.
Key responsibilities include reading meters manually or with computer technology, removing, resetting, or replacing meters, locating meters and water lines, testing and operating meters, and installing radio‑frequency read meters. The employee also responds to customer concerns in the field, repairs water leaks and meters, reviews meter reading schedules, investigates service discrepancies, provides information to customer service staff, and discontinues service for delinquent accounts.
The position requires a high school diploma or GED plus six months of experience in customer service, pipeline construction, or as a meter technician, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates must be able to read, write, perform basic math, use Microsoft Office and BJWSA software, operate a two‑way radio, PC, printer, copier, fax, calculator, and postage meter. A valid driver’s license is required.
