The Rail/Roadway Bridge Design Engineer IV – Movable Bridge Specialist will be based in Chicago, IL and will enhance AECOM’s regional bridge team with expertise in bascule, vertical‑lift, transporter and swing bridge design. The role involves leading movable‑bridge projects, mentoring junior engineers, and delivering technical reports, contract drawings, specifications, design calculations, and cost estimates.
- Lead movable‑bridge projects and serve as technical resource for project teams.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
- Conduct existing bridge inspections, condition assessments, and develop rehabilitation strategies.
- Prepare technical reports, client communications, contract drawings, specifications, design calculations, and cost estimates.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high communication standards.
- Travel occasionally to job sites; sponsorship not available.

The position requires a BA/BS and at least six years of relevant experience, a Professional Engineer license in Illinois or Wisconsin (or ability to obtain within two years), and the ability to pass a motor‑vehicle record check. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, advanced knowledge of 3D finite‑element software such as CSiBridge or MIDAS, and railroad bridge design experience.
Work is performed largely independently with minimal supervision, and excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Occasional travel to job sites is expected, and the role does not offer sponsorship now or in the future.
- Hold a BA/BS with 6+ years of experience; possess a PE license in IL or WI (or obtain within 2 years) and pass MVR check.
- Preferred: master’s degree, 6+ years designing movable bridges, proficiency in CSiBridge, MIDAS, SAP2000, and railroad bridge design experience.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including proposal preparation.
