Power Distribution Designer

Description

The Power Distribution Designer will work on electric utility distribution projects and be responsible for fielding, designing, and coordinating the projects as needed with the utility and utility customer. Performance of design and engineering tasks is expected, and occasional training of junior‑level designers may be required. Project types include design of aerial and underground electric distribution lines, and the position works under the supervision of a senior engineer/designer while reporting to project management. The selected candidate must be comfortable working remotely.

• Ensure engineering activities meet company and contract requirements and support the construction schedule.
• Apply design standards to aerial and underground pole line cable systems, including joint use, pole replacement, primary service, and reliability/maintenance designs.
• Review and produce design drawings, bills of material, cost estimates, and traffic control plans using CAD tools.
• Create detailed design documentation for utility systems, line layout, overhead/underground distribution, and resolve utility conflicts.
• Apply industry and customer codes for work order drawings, covering voltage drop, load balancing, cable sizing, and NESC clearances.
• Conduct field data collection, prepare accurate sketches, and record pole measurements and conditions.
• Prepare construction prints and work order documentation.
• Perform field checks of designs and provide technical support during construction, including planning, execution, and quality control.
• Coordinate design reviews with utility customers and maintain project records for contract compliance.
• Communicate issues and changes promptly to the project manager/lead to manage cost, schedule, and customer impacts.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, designers, and drafters to deliver cost‑effective, high‑quality infrastructure solutions.
• Implement design modifications to improve project quality and processes.
• Interface with vendors and on‑site crews to ensure construction quality and schedule adherence.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree or equivalent experience in electrical distribution system design.
• 3–5 years of PPL electric distribution design experience.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean record for the past five years; regional travel as required.
• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
• Preferred: 5+ years in the power distribution industry.
• Experience with AutoCAD 2D and 3D.
• Knowledge of right‑of‑way acquisition processes.
• Familiarity with highway, railroad, and waterway crossing requirements.
• Ability to produce detailed structural modification drawings.
