The Operating Engineer is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment across all systems. Individuals must demonstrate technical expertise in one craft area—such as Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations—and be multi‑skilled in others to complete daily assignments.
Day‑to‑day duties include maintaining mechanical, plumbing, structural, fire, life‑safety, and control systems, performing preventive maintenance, managing inventory, and overseeing contracted services. Tasks also involve cleaning, inspecting, calibrating, and replacing HVAC components, recording equipment readings, and ensuring safe handling of hazardous materials.
Required qualifications are a high school diploma or equivalent and 2‑4 years of experience maintaining commercial building systems, with the ability to diagnose and correct mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC issues. Preferred qualifications include EPA 608 Type II or Universal certification, computer proficiency in Word and Excel, and two years of trades schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC.
The position is onsite in Fairfax, VA, with a 9 am–5:30 pm shift and a salary range of $54,400‑$78,900, and does not provide visa sponsorship.
