The role of ONS Operator is based at the Port of Ipswich, responsible for running the Local Port Services (LPS) and Lock function, and providing remote support to the marine function in King's Lynn.
- Provide 24‑hour VHF radio and front‑desk telephone cover for Ipswich port.
- Arrange pilotage, towage, mooring and transport as required.
- Safely operate the Ipswich Lock.
- Manage and record vessel activities and maintain port documentation, including data entry to PAVIS for billing and CERS3 compliance.
- Issue ABP permission forms for berth activities and ensure compliance with relevant permissions.
- Report unsafe practices or hazards to the Harbour Master or Deputy for appropriate response.
- Liaise with ABP staff, contractors, vessel agents, owners, operators and customers to deliver port services such as pilotage, linesmen, watering and other vessel requirements.
- Operate the Ipswich Swing Bridge safely, considering vessel, road user and pedestrian safety, in line with procedures.
- Monitor vessel movements in the harbour and approaches to ensure safe, efficient use of facilities.
- Issue Special Directions on behalf of the Harbour Master as delegated authority.
- Act as first point of contact for emergency response, initiating port emergency plans and coordinating with emergency services.
- Comply with Safety Management Systems and company health & safety directives.
- Assist in training and familiarising new staff.
- Work a rostered 12‑hour shift pattern, including unsociable hours.
- Adopt a flexible, committed approach within a small team delivering high‑quality port and marine services.
