The primary purpose is to weld steel parts for structural, plate, and miscellaneous assemblies according to shop drawings, weld symbols, procedures, and AISC code requirements. Essential duties include identifying steel shapes and tolerances, preheating and cutting pieces, cleaning welds, fabricating sub-components, and spotting drawing errors early.
The role requires the ability to read and interpret technical drawings, perform arithmetic calculations, and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors. Candidates must maintain an AWS certification on 1-inch plate in the flat position using GMAW and FCAW, pass fillet-weld break and Drake-Williams welding and fitting tests, and be proficient with measuring tools, cutting torches, and crane hand signals.
Physical demands involve continuous standing, walking, and reaching over 8-12 hour shifts, frequent lifting of up to 85 lb, occasional climbing ladders, and handling tools such as grinders and hammers. Employees must wear required PPE—including steel-toe shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats—and be prepared for variable shop conditions such as heat, fumes, and exposure to solvents.
Required tools include squares, tape measures, weld leads, grinders, hammers, torches, wire brushes, and clamps; equipment used includes welders, overhead and jib cranes, forklifts, pallets, and saw horses. Applicants need a high-school diploma or equivalent and at least six months of welding experience in a steel fabrication environment, or a one-year welding technology certificate.
The position is located in Omaha, NE (ZIP 68110) and is a full-time, second-shift role (3:30 PM – 1:45 AM) with a salary range of $19.00 to $30.00 per hour. The shift schedule includes a 40-hour work week with possible overtime and weekend work as needed.
