The Sorter is responsible for safely and efficiently processing incoming recyclable materials so that outbound commodities are acceptable for sale to various brokers or mills. This role ensures that the material stream meets quality standards and supports the company's recycling operations.
Key duties include sorting and segregating recoverable items such as aluminum, plastic, glass, and paper from incoming waste, and depositing the sorted materials into the appropriate chutes. The Sorter assists colleagues with heavy or bulky items when needed, inspects loads for unacceptable waste, and removes any prohibited items. Communication with equipment operators about special waste loads and adherence to safety policies, including emergency belt stops, are also essential.
The position requires previous experience working in a recycling facility performing material sorting. Candidates must be able to follow safety protocols and work effectively as part of a team.
