The Senior HSE Advisor – Manufacturing provides leadership and oversight for health, safety, and environmental practices across manufacturing plants. This role is plant-focused, ensuring day-to-day operations meet regulatory requirements and company standards. The Senior Advisor directly supervises HSE Coordinators assigned to manufacturing plants and reports to the Director of HSE.

  • Drive HSE initiatives in the plants, fostering a proactive safety culture and strong worker engagement.
  • Lead and oversee HSE practices in manufacturing plants, ensuring compliance with legislation, company policies, and plant-specific requirements.
  • Serve as the primary resource for regulatory updates, plant requirements, and internal program changes as they relate to manufacturing operations.
  • Represent the HSE department in meetings and liaise with internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • Collaborate with plant managers, supervisors, and employees to integrate HSE into planning, scheduling, and execution.
  • Occasional evenings or weekend work may be necessary for incident response, Ministry of Labour inspections, or project deadlines.
  • Conduct regular inspections, audits, and observations, addressing hazards and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Triage and escalate issues based on severity and complexity to the Director of HSE.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to HSE Coordinators, ensuring consistency and alignment in the delivery of HSE programs across manufacturing operations.
  • Report directly to the Director of HSE, providing updates on plant safety performance, emerging risks, and program needs.
  • Lead incident investigations, ensuring root causes are identified, corrective actions are implemented, and lessons learned are communicated.
  • Support succession planning by developing the skills and capabilities of HSE Coordinators, preparing them for expanded responsibilities.
  • Ensure HSE documentation (procedures, permits, checklists, reports) is completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner.

  • Thorough knowledge of Ontario OHSA.
  • Understanding of WHMIS 2015 requirements and chemical hazard assessment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
  • Familiarity with WSIB processes and return-to-work programs.
  • Travel: Regular travel required to the Niagara region
  • Proven track record of reducing incident rates and improving safety culture.
  • Experience with HSE management systems and Ontario regulatory compliance.
  • A combination of related education and 5-7 years of progressive HSE experience in Ontario manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation techniques and root cause analysis.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
  • Experience with HSE software systems and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience with hazardous materials management, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and machine safety.
  • JHSC certification preferred.
  • Strong leadership and influence skills with ability to drive change.
  • Health & safety designation (such as CHSC, NCSO, or other accreditation) preferred.
  • Understanding of industrial hygiene principles and exposure assessment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
