Description

In this role you will manage a structural inspection team to create a prioritised, risk‑based maintenance programme for highway structures under the responsibility of Staffordshire County Council, while collaborating with rail, national highway, canal, river and private developers to ensure technical compliance of third‑party structures. The position offers a clear pathway to senior, lead senior or principal bridge engineering roles for candidates with chartered or chartership‑in‑progress status and experience in bridge assessment, design and maintenance.

• Lead a structural inspection team to develop risk‑based maintenance programmes for highway structures.
• Collaborate with rail, national highway, canal, river and private developers to ensure technical compliance of third‑party structures.
• Deliver whole‑life cycle bridge maintenance solutions that are timely, cost‑effective and optimise road‑space usage.
• Provide technical guidance, prepare and review designs, calculations, drawings and documentation.
• Mentor and supervise junior engineers and technicians, acting as Delegated Engineer.
• Liaise with client and supplier representatives, attend progress meetings and address queries.
• Manage a locally based single‑discipline technical team and ensure workload delivery.
• Contribute to bid preparation and business development activities.
• Promote and enforce effective health and safety practices within the team.

Requirements

• Significant experience in structural/bridge engineering, including assessment, design and maintenance.
• Ability to produce and review technically sound engineering solutions meeting standards and client requirements.
• Proficiency with analytical software such as LUSAS and Autodesk Structural Bridge Design.
• Strong commercial awareness and understanding of CDM regulations and risk assessment.
• Experience managing hazards, risks and interface management across disciplines.
• Chartered status with ICE or IStructE (or equivalent) desirable; working towards chartership acceptable.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
