The Substation Section Manager role is critical to HDR’s mission of changing the world for the better, overseeing substation projects of varying sizes and complexities while driving quality, schedule, and budget performance.
The manager will lead program and project management activities—from scope development and proposal creation to team assignment, execution, closeout, and quality control—while applying basic project management tools, financial controls, and risk management. They will supervise substation team leads, coordinate hiring plans, nurture cross‑office technical relationships, and maintain a positive work environment.
Additional duties include developing a mentorship program in partnership with related sections, ensuring compliance with HDR’s Quality Management System, forecasting workload and utilization, and representing HDR in client management, industry conferences, budgeting sessions, and strategic meetings. Participation in industry associations and creation of white papers or conference presentations will enhance HDR’s visibility.
Preferred candidates have senior technical or leadership experience in utilities or consulting engineering, familiarity with various substation design layouts, and knowledge of jobsite electrical hazards and safety protocols.
Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience), at least 10 years of relevant experience, professional registration or certification as needed, strong communication and listening skills, ability to manage multiple assignments, and demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities. A commitment to HDR’s employee‑owned culture is essential.
