  • Hazard Assessment & Control: Reviews and monitors health and safety hazards, performs risk assessments, and implements strategies to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses.
  • Training & Communication: Designs and delivers training programs on health and safety topics to employees and management to foster a strong safety culture.
  • Reporting: Produces reports, analyzes trends, and presents findings and recommendations for improving safety.
  • Program Development & Implementation: Develops, implements, and continuously improves health and safety policies, programs, and procedures for the organization.
  • Workplace Inspections & Audits: Conducts regular workplace inspections and audits to ensure compliance with health and safety standards and identify potential risks.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations and legislation.
  • Incident Investigation: Leads and coordinates the investigation of workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses, preparing reports and recommending corrective actions.

Working out of our Head Office in beautiful Nanaimo, BC, the Health and Safety Specialist will support with several HSE programs & projects across all FMI divisions. This role combines technical safety expertise with strong analytical and digital collaboration skills. A key focus of the role is leveraging health and safety statistics, proficient in Microsoft Excel for data collection and reporting and will have extensive knowledge in program structure, document control, workflow automation.

  • Technical Expertise: Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety topics and ability to analyze and assess technical materials.
  • Advanced skills in Excel, Word & Statistical Analysis - required
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.
  • Technological Literacy: Proficiency in using technology for inspections, data recording, and communication.
  • 3+ years relevant experience - required
  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or Business, Statistics degree/certificate
  • Willingness to pitch in wherever needed.
  • Observation & Critical Thinking: Strong observation skills to identify hazards and critical thinking skills to solve safety problems.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple duties and priorities simultaneously.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to critically evaluate health and safety challenges and determine the best solutions.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to prepare reports, provide information, and conduct training.
