The Systems Operations Engineering (SOE) Engineer supports the Duke Energy Carolinas Energy Control Center and the Reliability Coordinator function as defined by NERC. The role develops daily, weekly, and seasonal operating studies and reliability assessments to ensure compliance with all applicable Reliability Standards and Operating/Interconnection Agreements. Positions are hired at either Engineer I (entry level) or Engineer II (intermediate) based on experience.

Perform operational planning studies and reliability assessments with Systems Operations, Transmission System Planning, and external counterparts.
Develop real‑time transmission operation solutions and procedures for system configuration changes or generation re‑dispatch.
Resolve operating issues with generation entities, neighboring systems, and load‑serving entities.
Conduct pre‑ and post‑operating system performance assessments and provide emergency support during storms.
Support special studies for corporate planning and compliance with FERC and NERC requirements.
Maintain accurate Energy Management System network modeling and equipment ratings.
Participate in industry working groups and reliability/interconnection agreement committees.
Lead non‑routine engineering projects, managing schedules and interfaces with minimal oversight.
Prepare and review documentation for FERC and NERC compliance.

Work is performed in a hybrid model after onboarding, requiring a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility. Employees must obtain NERC certification, and relocation assistance is available when applicable.

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (Master’s may substitute).
Engineer II requires a minimum of two years of relevant engineering experience.
Electrical Engineering degree preferred; utility industry experience valued.
Understanding of Energy Control Center, grid management processes, EMS/SCADA, and substation operations.
Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
Proficiency in project management principles.
