The successful candidate will maintain and repair Hitachi rolling‑stock assets while operating and maintaining the wheel lathe. Responsibilities include planned maintenance of the lathe and ancillary equipment, wheel turning for both Hitachi and third‑party stock, and post‑operation checks and adjustments to ensure compliance with operational specifications.
In addition to lathe duties, the technician will undertake both planned and unplanned defect maintenance on rolling stock, including removal, replacement, modification, and assembly of traction and other components using engineering processes and hand tools. They will identify, assess and rectify defects, carry out repairs according to technical scopes of work, and provide operational support to users of Hitachi rolling‑stock assets.
The role requires a sound knowledge of relevant rules and regulations, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to represent Hitachi professionally. Required qualifications include an M & E ONC or a completed apprenticeship in mechanical or electrical disciplines, with Engineering NVQ Levels 2 and 3 being preferred.
Desirable but not essential skills include intermediate IT proficiency (Word, Excel), experience with milling, turning or CNC equipment, and familiarity with Network Rail Sentinel PTS depot driving, shunting, and wheel‑lathe operations and maintenance.
