This position is responsible for implementation of corporate, field and office ESH policies and procedures in assigned business units and/or larger project sites. The role ensures consistent application of safety, health, and environmental standards throughout the organization.
The ESH Manager champions “The Layton Way” by delivering predictable outcomes for internal teams, external teams, and customers, and ensures that “Constructing with Integrity” is delivered through honesty, unity, safety, and quality of work. The role assists in establishing a safety culture within the assigned operating business unit(s) and functionally supervises the safety behavior of all craft workers and employees.
Key responsibilities include managing safety programs on all projects, such as Owner Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP) and other complex risk‑management initiatives, and providing regulatory review, technical advice, and improvements to ESH tools, processes, policies, and training. The manager continuously reviews audit summaries, daily observations, and injury statistics to propose structured risk‑reduction programs and shares data with the VP of Safety. Additional duties involve monitoring new legislation, workers’ compensation issues, conducting incident review meetings, overseeing monthly audits, implementing Safety 360 training for OSHA/MSHA compliance, participating in pre‑construction meetings, ensuring accurate accident reporting, and assisting with injury management and cost control.
The position interacts with SBU leaders, craft personnel, site supervision, HR, marketing, accounting, as well as government agencies such as OSHA, EPA, and MSHA, and represents the company with industry organizations like AGC and ABC. Additional duties include performing other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety & Health or a related field (or equivalent experience), excellent knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations, and 10‑15 years of ESH experience (preferred). Preferred credentials are ASP and CSP accreditations, OCIP experience, and basic Spanish communication skills. The candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and coaching abilities, industrial hygiene knowledge, proficient written and verbal presentation skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and a commitment to problem solving, organization, attention to detail, and continuous improvement.
