Field Engineer – Transportation projects

Description

• Perform a variety of tasks such as research, testing, problem solution, construction management/administration of transportation projects.
• Participate in field visits and inspections as required.
• Serve as a representative of the firm at all required meetings, leading client coordination throughout the construction process.
• Conduct and document field observations for construction activities performed by contractors for roadway and bridge projects.
• Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and related codes and standards.
• Ensure construction work conforms to design documents, approved submittals, regional standards, local codes, and best practices while adhering to schedule and budget.
• Identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
• Communicate deficiencies to management or proper personnel.
• Coordinate with construction contractors, municipal and private property owners cooperatively to overcome challenges in the client’s best interest.
• Monitor construction progress and guide contractors to ensure adherence to project timelines.
• Discuss plans, specifications, and work schedules with project managers, engineers, contractors, utility companies, and governmental agencies.
• Prepare monthly pay applications and change orders for client presentation.
• Assist project management staff in identifying problems and developing viable solutions.
• Communicate and enforce construction quality standards.
• Follow company safety policies and procedures.
• Review contractor submittals for compliance with project specifications.
• Assist in resolving construction‑related disputes or claims.

Requirements

• The role requires the employee to reside in the Columbus, OH metro area.
• Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering is preferred.
• Associate’s degree or greater in Construction Management, or equivalent 3+ years of experience in construction/inspection on transportation projects.
• Previous ODOT construction inspection/project experience is preferred but not required.
• In‑depth understanding of construction principles and concepts.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Attention to detail and a proactive approach to learning.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
