- Conduct site visits, quantity take‑offs, pricing and present estimates for cost engineering and management review.
- Assemble and finalize estimates with engineering support as required.
- Review and validate outsourced estimates with engineering assistance.
- Incorporate historical data, contract information, and actual project costs into Valard’s cost model.
- Format estimates according to Owners Reporting standards.
- Analyze design basis, engineering documents, and basis of estimate to develop accurate estimates.
- Prepare written bid deliverables, including scope understanding, assumptions, and execution plans.
- Provide estimating input on complex conceptual projects and guide non‑estimating personnel.
- Participate in project planning sessions and team meetings to contribute estimating expertise.
- Develop relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain pricing for estimates.
- Assist in creating execution, sequencing, logistics plans, and preliminary project schedules.

Our Substations group is seeking an Estimator to join our expanding team, with locations in Calgary, AB; Vaughan, ON; or a remote setting anywhere in Canada. Reporting to the Manager, Substation Estimating, the role requires experience in Electrical Utility Construction, preferably with Substations or Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, and the ability to compile cost estimates, assess material, labour and equipment, analyze subcontractor quotes, and support competitive tender packages profitably.
- Communicate effectively, both written and oral, with the estimating team, management, clients, and industry contacts.
- Hold post‑secondary education in Electrical Engineering, Journeyman Electrician, or related field.
- Possess 10 years of utility construction experience with estimating exposure, or 5 years dedicated estimating experience.
- Have 3+ years of estimating experience on projects ranging from $1M to $50M.
- Demonstrated experience in EPC estimating/execution and preparing bid submission deliverables.
- Proficient with InEight Estimating Software.
- Knowledge of estimating practices, techniques, equipment, and construction budgeting.
- Ability to read drawings, specifications, and assess completeness of construction documents.
- Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada with no restrictions.
