Description

During step three apprentices will engage in a wide range of primary line‑work tasks, including installing protective covers, rigging and transferring conductors, making transformer connections, operating switches and fusing, grounding equipment, and taking ampere readings. They will also learn to install stringing blocks, clip and tie conductors, install dead‑end assemblies and jumpers, and use wire‑stringing tools while following strict safety protocols.

• Install primary protective covers.
• Use hoses, blankets, and guards during line work.
• Perform supervised primary line work and assist with single‑phase transformer installations.
• Hang equipment from trucks, buckets, or pole blocks.
• Make transformer connections and operate switches and fusing.
• Transfer, sag, dead‑end, and rig primary conductors, including lateral and hot‑arm transfers.
• Install stringing blocks for straight, slight‑angle, and hard‑angle runs.
• Clip and tie primary conductors using copper, aluminum, angle, preform ties, and armor rods.
• Install dead‑end assemblies and both temporary and permanent jumpers.
• Operate wire‑stringing equipment such as rope rigs, tensioners, and Kellum grips.
• Phase primary circuits using phasing sticks.
• Perform pole framing, guying, setting, and replacing poles.
• Conduct safety protocols for overhead line maintenance and bucket‑truck operations.
• Use multimeters and line test equipment for diagnostics.
• Conduct tree trimming and safe bucket‑truck operations.

Requirements

The step‑three apprenticeship builds on basic tool skills and energized secondary work by introducing apprentices to energized primary circuits and single‑phase transformer connections. Apprentices must obtain a complete set of personal climbing gear by the end of step two and work aloft under direct supervision of a lineman or foreman who remains physically present on the pole or bucket.

Apprentices are required to complete advanced training courses such as Advanced Rigging, Overhead Distribution Systems, Service Installation, Pole Framing and Guying, Setting and Replacing Poles, Safety in Overhead Line Maintenance, Multimeter Operation, Line Test Equipment usage, Tree Trimming, and Safe Bucket‑Truck Operations.

• Ground apparatus and take primary ampere readings.
• Complete advanced rigging and overhead distribution system training.
