Senior Substation Engineer - P&C

Description

• Perform full protection and control design for high‑voltage (4 kV–230 kV) and extra‑high‑voltage (>230 kV) substation projects, including drawings, schematics, BOMs, wiring diagrams, and communication layouts.
• Conduct load calculations, transformer sizing, CT saturation studies, and voltage‑drop/cable‑sizing analyses.
• Develop specifications for major substation equipment.
• Review vendor submittals and ensure they meet project specifications and requirements.
• Cross‑check P&C deliverables with other discipline teams and perform interdisciplinary reviews.
• Participate in internal and external project meetings as needed.
• Support the Project Engineer with procurement and construction‑related tasks.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program and possess EIT certification. At least four years of experience designing high‑voltage (4 kV‑230 kV) and extra‑high‑voltage (>230 kV) substation protection and control systems is required, together with strong knowledge of protection zones, typical scheme designs, relay manufacturers, major substation equipment, and industry codes such as ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC and NERC. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also essential.

• Hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and EIT certification.
• Bring at least four years of high‑voltage substation P&C design experience and strong knowledge of protection zones, relay schemes, and major equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, instrument transformers, disconnect switches, LV AC/DC systems, capacitor banks, and control enclosures.
• Demonstrate familiarity with industry standards and codes (ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NESC, NERC) and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Possess or be able to obtain a professional engineering license within two years of hire (preferred).
• Have experience working in a consultancy environment and on large‑scale renewable energy projects (preferred).
• Understand relay settings, protection device coordination, SCADA, communications systems, and substation construction practices (preferred).

Benefits

The position is a full‑time, in‑office role with preferred locations in Austin, TX; Madison, WI; Raleigh, NC; and Charlotte, NC, though other sites may be considered. Compensation ranges from $90,000 to $120,000 annually, and candidates who can obtain a professional engineering license within two years are given preference.
