The Underground Groundman is an entry-level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. The role works at various locations and may require travel to another state based on customer demands.
- Perform new construction, maintenance, and repair of energized and de-energized underground systems safely.
- Set pad-mount transformers.
- Work around energized high-voltage systems with skill and care.
- Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Operate company radio correctly.
- Apply basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knots.
- Use and maintain hand tools properly.
- Identify primary and secondary voltage on circuits.
- Assist with installation and hookup of single-phase transformers.
- Perform basic bucket rescue/escape procedures.
- Observe minimum approach distances.
- Meet excavation and shoring requirements.
- Check voltage on transformers.
- Install and remove service lines.
- Inspect rubber goods and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Wear appropriate PPE as required.
- Climb various structures (wood, steel) using proper tools.
- Work in underground trenches and manholes.
- Identify different line-work materials.
- Work outdoors in inclement weather.

No prior experience is required; candidates must be able to read and communicate effectively in English and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit within 60 days (CDL preferred). The job may involve long-distance travel on short notice, extended periods on-site, lifting over 50 lb, and overtime, including weekends and holidays.
The position demands regular standing, walking, hearing, talking, and frequent use of hands, often in outdoor weather, inclement conditions, loud construction sites, and exposure to fumes, vibration and airborne particles. Employees must be capable of working in trenches, manholes, heights, confined spaces, and at ground level while following safety rules.
