The Senior Category Specialist is a mid‑level individual contributor who drives value through category management and supplier relationship functions. This role optimizes supply‑chain operations across assigned categories by leveraging data‑driven decisions, improving efficiency, and supporting long‑term business goals. The specialist also serves as a subject‑matter expert and may mentor team members, contributing to best‑practice development.
The specialist leads category‑level analysis to uncover performance trends, operational inefficiencies, and strategic opportunities. They support or lead end‑to‑end performance reviews that target cost reduction, service improvements, and greater operational efficiency. Strategic sourcing and RFx events for medium to large, complex projects are also managed, with the specialist acting as the expert for assigned categories.
Strong communication skills enable the specialist to translate data insights into compelling stories for senior leaders and key stakeholders. They develop negotiation plans, participate in complex negotiations, and align category strategies with broader supply‑chain objectives. Additional duties include root‑cause analysis of disruptions, implementation of corrective actions, and support for initiatives such as network optimization, inventory modeling, and scenario planning.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Law, or a related field (JD or master’s preferred) or four years of relevant experience, plus 1‑3 years in supply‑chain or procurement and 3‑4 years in category or contract management. Candidates must demonstrate problem‑solving, sourcing methodology knowledge, multi‑commodity management, negotiation, and advanced Excel/modeling capabilities. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, procurement/ERP systems (PeopleSoft, Ariba), and strong written and verbal communication are also essential.
